What the top nine 2026 actually is

Nine posts from the year, ranked by one metric, arranged in a 3 × 3 grid. The rules are simple — which is why everyone breaks them differently.

“Top nine” is shorthand for a year recap: the nine posts you published during the calendar year that earned the most of a metric. It is laid out three by three, the shape of an Instagram profile, and posted as a single image or a Story.

The three ingredients of a ranking

  1. The window. Posts published between 1 January and 31 December 2026. A post from December 2025 that kept collecting likes is out — the recap is about the year you published, not the year the algorithm noticed.
  2. The posts. Photos, carousels and Reels shared to the feed. A carousel counts once, whatever the number of slides.
  3. The metric. Likes, saves or comments, counted as they stand when you build the card. A ranking made from a screenshot taken in March is already wrong.

Why two top nines of the same account can differ

ChoiceEffect on the nine
LikesRewards reach: posts that were seen a lot
SavesRewards usefulness: posts people kept
CommentsRewards conversation: often the posts you forgot
Personal pickRewards taste, not the audience

The traps

Missing counters. Instagram does not always return every metric. A post with an unknown counter must be shown as unknown, never as zero — otherwise a good post silently drops out of the nine.

Screenshot pipelines. Tools that ask you to upload thirty photos are not ranking anything: they are picking from what you gave them, which may include posts you never published.

Stale numbers. Build the card in the last week of December, not in November.

In one sentence

A top nine 2026 is an honest ranking of your published year, laid out in the geometry of the feed.

Does Instagram have a top nine feature?

No. It is a community ritual; there is no official button. Third-party apps build the card from the posts you published.

Do I need a Creator or Business account?

Only for the automatic ranking. Instagram exposes per-post counters for Creator and Business accounts, not personal ones.
